GV Mens Rd 5 Report

16 Apr 2014 by Tony Craswell

A beep on the phone.

The text.

It came late at night on Monday from a squad member that still has yet to play a game. In the midst of our darkest season it is a light that shines like a beacon. It is what pennant represents to a club, its players and this team. Simply asking if it is possible to organize a practice on Easter Monday.

We sit at 0 – 5 after again seeing the strength of Sanctuary Lakes around the kikuyu of Kooringal. It is a special skill to play the grabbing surrounds and super-fast green surfaces. It is difficult and the Sanctuary boys are good, lead the division and are assured of Division 1 next year. I read that Australian schools will be introducing Singapore mathematics as it is better, easier to understand and creates faster learning of the skills of addition. Well sadly, even our Singaporean neighbors could not work out a solution to the Division 2 table; we are out of the equation to stay up now. As Kooringal drove their home course advantage into the heart of Long Island 6 – 1 they also stuck it through the guts of us as well.

Well done to TRob who was dominant throughout his match. Great battle from Shane who was called up late as emergency with Dapper stuck in the gridlock of the city thanks to the Run for the Kids. Sanctuary Lakes however were simply too good and we wish them well again in Division 1 next year. We vow to meet them again cause we also vow to bounce straight back up.

It is ok to lose. Results are what they are and it is inevitable that when you go into a 2 horse race that only one can win. However, the text sent late on Monday night shows that we have not been defeated. The heart still beats in this team and the desire to continue to do our best this season shines through. We owe it to the club and its members who stand behind us, we owe it to Back in Motion, a local community business that have put up their hand to help, to our other sponsors who back us through thick and thin as well, we owe it to the supporters and caddies who turn up each week, post on our Team App so we can all follow and we owe it to each other, a squad intent on continuing to be better. There is no one in the team that has lost the fight to keep improving.

Next year is our challenge but we will continue to focus on the 2 games left to play. A win would be nice but as the text in the middle of the night shows, the spirit of our team will not be defeated.
